The city of Bangkok has changed – almost beyond recognition from the time I first arrived in 1986.

Lately, the rapidity of the change is unnerving. The complete disregard for its history, and the obliteration of the skyline with one massive skyscraper after another, has taken its toll in the population. Contractors wantonly ignore construction codes and orders – inevitably causing injuries and death.

A dear friend of mine’s family were victims of just such a travesty several years ago, and I watched in anger as he fought for not just compensation for the loss of his son, but for an admission of guilt. But he was stifled at every turn by a legal system that favoured the corrupt and powerful.

Hence I’ve taken liberties to tell a version of his tale, not just because he and his family suffered so much, but so that their story and hundreds of others are not forgotten.

A Dark Christmas is set nine years after the events in The Siamese Connection. Martin’s daughter Nina is now nine and his eighteen-year-old adopted Cambodian son Hon is a musical prodigy. The boy’s amazing talent was instantly recognizable the first time he sat down on a piano bench. He is rehearsing for his first album to be followed by a world tour.

As Christmas rapidly approaches, things become tense in the LaRue household and in the studio as Hon’s mysterious French girlfriend Juliette arrives - commanding more and more of Hon’s precious time.

Tragedy strikes on Christmas Eve, bringing Martin and Ramonne together once again to face, perhaps, their greatest and most powerful modern enemy.

“Chilling & morbidly hilarious. Newport’s intimate knowledge of the Far East makes this an ultra – realistic journey into terror.”
